It's a fork of cgminer 3.7.2 specifically for scrypt. So code has been stripped of anything related to SHA-256 coins making it leaner. Many of the fixes in later releases of cgminer have been applied. At this point the codebases haven't diverged much, but the idea is that sgminer can evolve to support scrypt better. I'm willing to pay a small, but reasonable sum of 2 LTC to the member who can help me figure out how I can get my 5 graphics cards working in my Windows 7 rig properly. Every time I add an additional GPU to my 6 GPU rig either that (7th) GPU or another GPU becomes disabled in MSI AB and Windows Device Manager.
Windows Device Manager gives me a /! 'device not working properly' error for one of the GPU's.
MSI After Burner gives me locked settings for one of the GPU's.
I have seen upwards of 8 GPU's running in a Windows 7 rig. I think its possible but just complicated and a hassle. Currently my rig is composed of a 7990, 6990, and 2 6950's. It works great and runs very smoothly. However, the second I throw in anything else whether it be a 7950 or a 6970 another GPU becomes disabled.
My system (Windows and MSI AB) does recognize the additional GPU, it just wont let me use and overclock the additional GPU.
I have tried numerous slot configurations. I have tried multiple drivers (including AMD's, Techpowerup's and Guru3D's releases). I have also attempted to install 12.6 drivers for the one GPU that is listed as /! 'not working properly' on Device Manager. Nothing seems to work.
I'd really appreciate the input. Please let me know if you need any additional information in order to solve the issue.
Cheers, Nick.
Update::
- @69gobbles & @read-the-article Yes, Windows 8 does detect all 7 GPU's but has a massive performance penalty. And so, I was unsuccessful with this route.
- @thetran209 the ATIMan uninstaller did uninstall all drivers, I ran successfully with no errors. I rebooted and was in 800x600 I then successfully installed, with no errors, the darkryder 12.8 drivers. The result was that it did not detect all the cards. It only detected the 6xxx series cards. The 7xxx series cards came up as 'VGA Standard Drivers' (on both Windows DM and MSI AB). And so, I was unsuccessful with this route.
- @_r2h & @sniperwhg I did try multiple additions of the Techpowerup drivers among many other driver releases, everything from 12.6, 13.1 to 13.9. These did not work either. I gave a shot at doing the general 13.1 install with the 12.6 selective install for the cards that didn't show up in Windows Device Manager. However, this caused more problems than it solved, as every time I would install a new driver, others would become disabled. And so, I was unsuccessful with this route.
- @modderextreme while it is true that these cards do work for 4 and maybe even 5 cards, it did not work for my setup. The drivers gave me a tone of 6xxx series cards with overclocking settings disabled in MSI AB. And a VGA Standard Driver listing for the 7990 in Windows Device manager & MSI AB. This route was all in all unsuccessful.
- @CSFFlame your claim that Windows 7/8 has a performance penalty is entirely correct. Both these operating systems don't seem to run, at least very well, 7 and most likely 8 GPU's without loosing a tone of performance on certain cards. My 7990 went from 2x660Khash to 2x250Khash.
SOLUTION THUS FAR::
- So after all of this. I decided to attempt Linux.
- I downloaded 12.04 Ubuntu LTS. I installed it successfully but had no Ethernet. This was a huge problem for me as I couldn't run updates. As I later realized, it is very difficult to get 12.04 LTS ethernet drivers for my hardware. The Qualcomm Atheros Bigfoot Killer E2200 Ethernet drivers only are available for later versions of Ubuntu such as 13.4 or 13.10.
- I then downloaded 13.10. I began to follow Ubuntu's installation tutorial (here)[http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/install-desktop-latest]. I used the Ubuntu recommended USB software to mount it to a USB. I then plugged that in and attempted to boot from it. I got a Ubuntu loading screen followed by a Black Screen. After researching, I then tried booting off the USB again. This time I hit F6. I got a select language menu. I then got to the boot menu on Ubunutu. I hit install along side Windows. I then got another Black screen. I booted off the USB again, hit F6, got to the Ubuntu boot menu. Disabled the nomodeset setting. Then hit install along side Windows. And FINALLY, it installed completely and successfully.
- After getting 13.10 up and running. I ran the 'sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade' commands. All the standard Linux update stuff. I then followed Cryptobadgers Tutorial here for installing Linux for LTC mining. I installed the required drivers and software necessities for CGMiner.
- After getting all my updates, drivers and software updates done for Ubuntu. I checked my GPU's with the 'sudo aticonfig --adapter=all --odgt' code. They all showed up properly labeled and where working normally!!!!
- Then I realized that there is no VDDC control for Linux (that is the consensus from what I have read so far). So I had to flash the BIOS of my 7990 to undervolt it. I then followed this tutorial on Rumor City here for modding and flashing 7xxx bios in and for Linux. I copied the BIOS for GPU 0 and 1 of the 7990. Modded both BIOS's in Windows with vBE7 undervolting them from 1200 to 1050. I then flashed the 7990 BIOS with these new modded BIOS's. And so far it looks like everything is running good.
If I can get the whole thing up and running decently for a day on Ubuntu 13.10 with these new modded drivers. I think the bulk of the two LTC will be going to @CSFFlame for leading me in the right direction (or the one that seems to work the best) from the start.
Anyways, I'll make more updates tomorrow.
Cheers and thank you all for your support thus far, Nick.
